artist statement/history

ad hoc Ballet is committed to creating new works, which incorporate elements of classical ballet, modern dance and theatre while exploring current social tribulations. Drawing inspiration from outsider populations and ideas that America tends to forget or ignore and uniting pathology with empathy to uncover new movement, ad hoc Ballet explores the beauty in the alternatives to the classical aesthetic of perfection.

ad hoc Ballet was founded in New York City in 2007 by choreographer Deborah Lohse to explore the evocative place where classical collides with avant-garde. While maintaining a strong presence in both ballet and contemporary worlds of dance, ad hoc Ballet makes work that questions assumptions, redefines line and embraces radical musicality. Drawing inspiration from experimental music, Lohse makes work with poignant meaning and underlying social commentary.

Through ad hoc's performance engagements, Lohse examines the fleeting quality of persons coming together to address an issue, share an experience and then disperse. ad hoc Ballet's dancers are drawn from a multitude of professional ballet companies creating a group that is always surprising, articulate and sometimes humorous. In venues ranging from downtown's Joe's Pub to uptown's Clark Theater at Lincoln Center, Lohse creates work that brings together diverse audiences.
