lmno3 : Lohse, Marquis 'n Oakley

But silly brilliance ruled the night...Lohse, Marquis and Oakley took names and kicked some butt in Ink Stink, playing against the words of a rapper seeking the crown of Miss Ogynist and turning them on their head, to full comic effect. Who knew tiny purses held such sustenance?

Beyond the temporal and spatial constraints [of the DanceNow Festival], anything goes. This year’s motley contenders include...the combined forces of the charismatic dancers Deborah Lohse, Donnell Oakley and Cori Marquis.

LMnO3 Biography

The collaborative trio LMnO3 (Deborah Lohse, Cori Marquis and Donnell Oakley) met in 2010 while working with Doug Elkins in Fräulein Maria, and joyfully launched into a choreographic partnership in 2014. Their first evening-length piece, B.A.N.G.S.: made in america, was commissioned by Dance Now NYC and premiered in Feb 2016 at Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater. LMnO3 took B.A.N.G.S. on the road to American Dance Festival, SUNY Brockport's Summer Dance Festival, MusikFest in PA, and Ringling International Arts Festival in Sarasota, FL, with excerpts performed in NY at Judson Church, Triskelion Arts, and Gibney Dance Center, as well as in New Haven's Elm City Dance Collective, and at The Yard as part of Follies: Women Dance the Comic. In 2017, upcoming performances include Dance Now Boston and an encore presentation at Joe’s Pub. LMnO3 has been granted residencies through Dance Now’s Silo, American Dance Institute/Lumberyard, SUNY Brockport, and Fourth Arts Block.

LMnO3’s latest work, More Like Your Mom, will premiere at Triskelion Arts in May 2017, with previews and excerpts presented at Dance Now’s Joe’s Pub Festival, SUNY Brockport, and at Chez Bushwick as a part of the Exponential Theater Festival.

LMnO3 embarks on an evening of shape-shifting through ideas of what it means to be female today when old ideals still hold strong images in our collective conscious. These women who are child-free by choice tackle expectations, identity and the multiple roles that are predestined for us. Through imagined games influenced by the competitive nature of the Olympics and the physical labor required in the role of motherhood, mundane everyday tasks are exaggerated and glorified as extreme sports and activities of high risk. Throughout these games, interactions, and interruptions, LMnO3 encourages the audience to engage with the multitude of ways in which we identify as women by challenging notions of femininity and celebrating alternative ways of channeling the instinct to nurture. The work digs into the personas we don, the functions they serve, and how we embrace our messy, imperfect, awkward, and uncomfortable selves.

B.A.N.G.S. is a kaleidoscopic pageant of status, attention, categorization, and femininity. In its first evening- length work, LMnO3 shape-shift in style and identity donning everything from velvet evening wear, to ripstop jumpsuits, to snack-filled purses, to sensible bathing suits as the dancers explore what they are—and aren’t— qualified to do. Serious play and creative instincts rule as the trio obsesses over the ideas behind B.A.N.G.S., a mnemonic acronym frequently used by French-language learners to know which adjectives go in front of the nouns Beauty, Age, Number, Goodness, and Size. Utilizing hard rap, body percussion, headlamps, a game show, and the power of female relationships, this comedic trio sets aside its own fear and doubt, beginning to repurpose how we can unapologetically wear our own B.A.N.G.S.
